Teachers in the Senior Unit plan collaboratively to ensure students are provided with the best learning experiences to suit their point of need.
At Canadian Lead Primary School, we run a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program from Grade 3 to Grade 6. This allows students to bring and use their own Apple iPad as a tool for learning. Students use their iPad regularly for Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Research and testing. Each term students complete an eLearning book that stores their learning goals for the term, learning experiences they have enjoyed most, as well as pictures. These books are presented to other students, parents and family members throughout the year. It’s a great way to reflect and monitor their learning for the year.
Prep Buddy Program
At the beginning of the year the Senior Unit students are paired up with the Prep 1 students. Each week or fortnight the buddies complete learning activities. Some activities include maths games, Writing, Reading, drawing and Resilience Project tasks. All students love the time spent with their buddies and are able to form relationships in the classroom as well as in the yard.
ERP’s, Educational Research Project
Each term the students in the Senior Unit participate in an ERP, Educational Research Project. For the first one to two weeks students are engaged and immersed in the topic area. In the following three to four weeks teachers provide students with new learning skills, these experiences are hands on and rich learning. The following two weeks teachers elaborate and go further with learning and build on previously learned experiences. The students then have two to three weeks where they are encouraged to work on their project, which is then presented to the class and marked by the teachers.
The Senior Unit students take part in The RACV Energy Breakthrough. The RACV Energy Breakthrough provides opportunities for students, teachers, parents and local industry to work together to design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that will represent an ‘energy breakthrough’. The program encourages participants to examine and use the latest technology while considering its impact on the environment and the way people live locally and globally. At Canadian Lead we have two teams that take part each year in Maryborough and other events. Our carts, Thunder and Lightning, are sponsored by local businesses, which we greatly appreciate. These sponsorships allow our students to take part in the events each year.
The Canadian Lead Netball team, Storm, play in Terms 2 and 3 on a Tuesday afternoon. This fantastic opportunity allows students at Canadian Lead to develop and master netball skills, work as a team, build social networks outside of school and foster an interest and love for sport.
